Ken Picton was named HJ's 2011 Wales and South West Hairdresser of the Year for his girly feminine collection with an edgy twist.

We quizzed Ken about the creative process behind his winning entry.

Ken-Picton-Wales.jpgWhy did you decide to enter the British Hairdressing Awards?

The British Hairdressing Awards are regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in hairdressing. They recognise people's work and creativity, and celebrate the very best in the business. Winning this award is one of the best achievements you can have in hairdressing

When did you start thinking about your collection?

We started thinking about and working on the collection in late January/early February.

What was your budget for the shoot?

£12-15,000

How did you find a photographer, stylist and makeup artist?

I have worked with my photographer for the last three collections. I went to him because I liked what he had done before, and had heard great things about him. My make-up artist works with me at the salon, and the stylist is one that was recommended by the photographer.

Tell us a little about your models. What do you look for in a hair model? How did you source them and how much did they cost?

We used mostly professional models for the more dressed looks, but we like to integrate some of our own models in to the collection. The normal fees we pay are £400 per half day

How long did it take from the day of the shoot to sending off a collection you were happy with?

We shoot towards the end of April and we have until the end of June to finalize the collection

How did entering the British Hairdressing Awards effect life in the salon - did your team get involved and did it mean you had to be away from the salon a lot?

Planning and doing the shoot have a great effect on the team - not to mention winning the award! Most of the prep is done in the salon with your team, so it's a great creative process for them to witness and be involved in.

What three tips would you give to people considering entering the British Hairdressing Awards?

  • Set a budget and stick to it
  • Pick your team carefully, and make sure they all know your concept, and ideas
  • Try and make sure your collection shows your style and is something you can be proud of

How, if at all, will you be marketing your win in the salon?

The trophy sits pride of place in the reception area for all clients to see. It also generates great press and the collection has had great coverage in the consumer and trade magazines
