North western hairdresser of the year - marcello moccia

The strong, sharp shapes, on-trend make-up and classic but contemporary styling in Marcello Moccia's collection impressed the British Hairdressing Awards judges.

It was a collection that was many months in the planning. Find out the story behind Marcello's North Western Hairdresser of the Year award-winning collection.

Why did you enter the British Hairdressing Awards?

I entered the BHA because it gives us great opportunity to showcase our hairdressing skills, create beautiful imagery and of course to shine.



When did you start thinking about your collection?

I started to think about my collection back in Jan 2011.

What was your budget for the shoot?

Our budget for the whole shoot was 8k.

How did you find a photographer, stylist and makeup artist?

I've worked with my photographer and make up/stylist for quite some time. But we originally met on a shoot and exchanged contacts.  

Tell us a little about your models. What do you look for in a hair model? How did you source them and how much did they cost?

Generally I organise castings with different agencies - it's very rare we use non-professionals. Street casting is great but you get to see lots more models of choice when you use agencies. When we are casting we always refer to our plan for the collection and start to shortlist the models who would suit the look. They generally cost between £300 £500 per half day. 

How long did it take from the day of the shoot to sending off a collection you were happy with?

It took about four weeks to finalise things after the shoot. 

How did entering the British Hairdressing Awards effect life in the salon - did your team get involved and did it mean you had to be away from the salon a lot?

Winning the award was awesome for all everyone involved with the collection. The team are so delighted that all their effort and creativity paid off and it has certainly created a buzz across all three salons. Without their support I would not be able spend time away preparing for the shoot. 

What three tips would you give to people considering entering the British Hairdressing Awards?

• Make sure that the direction and end results of the planed collection are clearly understood by all involved.
• Try to capture some key trends of the year.
• It's all about the hair so ensure your work is perfectly presented. 

How, if at all, will you be marketing your win in the salon?

We have lots fantastic PR locally nationally and internationally in salon we have our Winning collection on display at front of house.
