Wait…is bella hadid bringing this hair trend back?
We’re one foot into summer and that means a couple of things: overestimating the sun every morning and wishing you’d brought a jacket, seeing 22 degrees and stormy showers within the same week, a surge of blonde clients and the panicked desire for a transformation/glow up. One popular and quick way to completely switch up your look: a fringe. And It seems that a few of our favourite A-Listers are starting off the new season with a bang. Your clients have been no strangers to bottleneck bangs, Frenchie fringes, the Pammy fringe and wispy bangs (need I go on?) this past year, but is this unchartered 2022 territory? In the safe hands of hairstylist Evanie Frausto, Bella Hadid took us back to the 2000s and debuted her new side fringe at the 75Th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Although fine and piece-y, Evanie paired this with Bella’s signature slick bun and a subtle quiff, so the fractional fringe stuck out like a sore thumb (but in a good way of course). bella hadid side fringe Frausto styled the fringe to fall diagonally across her face, grazing past her eye to echo the sultry, mysterious vibe her smokey eye makeup paved the way for. "Bella’s subtle side fringe is certainly more unique, featuring lesser strands of hair, but worn up the fringe takes centre stage and stands out with the diagonal parting," explains Suzie McGill, artistic director at Rainbow Room International. "The side fringe is great for clients with rounder face shapes, as it’s a lot softer than that of a full, blunt fringe and it works to give the illusion of a longer face, plus it’s a great way for clients to update their look and give it a fun and fresh finish without changing their hair too drastically," says Suzie. Bella’s look wasn’t too dissimilar from Miley Cyrus’ head-turner transformation last week. Post-mullet, the singer opted for a lob and side fringe for an NBC dinner in New York. This look stands out amongst her daring hair record – sporting wolf cuts and shags – but we like this new look for Miley. miley cyrus side fringe "Miley’s side fringe is longer in length and I think this is the style of side fringe we will be seeing a lot of this year. This kind of style is great for framing the face and also compliments a mid-length style like Miley’s perfectly, giving the hair the appearance of body and volume," adds Suzie. In other fringe-related news, Selena Gomez caught the attention of her fans with a hair transformation on Tik Tok. Having had her fun with an array of fringe variations and a dark brown bob this spring, Selena switched it up for sleek caramel lengths, uber-long extensions and a blunt eyelash-skimming fringe. https://www.tiktok.com/@selenagomez/video/7101543910584995118?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7094630180182410757 We fear that her caption, “Just pretend, right?’ tells us this look is only temporary, but fingers crossed she takes the plunge and sets this look in stone.

2022's Fringe Fortune

"I think we will see a lot of these more low maintenance style fringes becoming on-trend this year. As well as side fringes, we will also see trends like razor bangs becoming on-trend, created using a razor instead of the usual cutting scissors to give softness to the face and create a much less ‘weighty’ fringe. These lighter fringe styles do not require as much styling as that of full fringes and suit many of this year’s hottest haircut trends including the shag and the pixie cut," adds Suzie. So, sound the alarm: the side fringe is back. For those clients that haven’t warmed to bottleneck bangs or the micro fringe, perhaps a trip down memory lane is the transformation they’ve been lusting after?
