Training and skills a priority
Last weeks time out of the office for me was very much about training and a focus on attracting the youth into the hairdressing industry. The opening of the HOB Assistant's Academy in Camden reaffirms the company's commitment to the highest quality training and the new facility features a salon/studio, theory room, demo and workshop area. Working with the Central Training Group, HOB's international creative director Akin Konizi commented, "Committed to the training and progression of our team, this new facility is dedicated to our apprentice development, ensuring they get the training they need to the superior standard we demand. Giving our apprentices the best possible start to their careers, this new opening in conjunction with The Central Training Group, is the first of its kind and is an incredible opportunity for us as a company, highlighting not only our belief in education, but our commitment to our team and clients."
The opening of WorldSkills 2011 followed for me and with silver sponsor L'Oreal Professionnel involved with the Ladies and Men's Hairdressing Competitions, the company also had a Have a Go area where visitors could try their hand at plaiting hair, placing temporary hair pieces, seeing afro demonstrations and choosing styles with the assitance of an Apple IPad.
"WorldSkills 2011 was a totally inspiring event," commented Vincent Mercier, Managing Director, L'Oréal Professional Products UK and Ireland. "The hairdressing competition was so interesting - it was brilliant to see different cultures competing against each other. The skills these young hairdressers possess are impressive and it was fantastic to see hairdressing as part of such a stimulating event. We were also very proud to have won Partner of the Year, and it was great to see the team honored for something we believe so passionately in - supporting the youth of our industry."
Delighted that HJ were the media partner for the event, I did 'have a go' with help from a very patient Chris, a student at Havering College - and by my second plait attempt was quite pleased with myself. However, my admiration and respect for the dexterity of hairdressers lives on!
