After nine years as a hairdresser, Tim Hyde decided to open his own salon and chose a former grain store that had been derelict since the 1940s to create his space.

Sticking with the 1930s and 40s vibe, Tim sourced furniture from antiques shops and reclamation yards, but added a modern twist with contemporary pieces and on-trend fashion images.

What were you aiming for when you created the salon?
Our aim was to create an intimate space with a truly bespoke feel and a high-end finish. We wanted to attract the kind of clients who appreciate attention to detail and quality. The most important thing about the salon is client comfort and a relaxed luxurious atmosphere. The work took three months in total.

Was there any structural work you had to undertake?
The entrance door was repositioned and a larger window fitted, plus we plastered some of the internal walls and built a partition wall and toilet. However, some of the internal walls were left unplastered - the original brickwork helps to keep the character of the space. This is also maintained through the dark wood finish floor from Karndean & Farrow and Ball paint.

What do you think are the most interesting features of the salon?
The individual items finish the salon look, such as the reception desk, which is a 1930s chest of drawers, the vintage leather chair and the colourful accessories like our yellow clock. The salon chairs are from Cerriotti and are a jade green snakeskin.

What do you wish you'd done differently?
