The stacked bob has been around for many years and it’s officially making a comeback but with a modern twist. Which is why, we went to the experts to find out everything you need to know about the hair trend.
We’ve recently seen celebrities such as Jenna Ortega, and Florence Pugh opt for the chop, but more recently, we saw Emma Stone show off a ‘cool girlie summer bob’ by Mara Roszak, featuring longer layers at the front. Which leads us to the stacked bob…
What is the stacked bob?
Otherwise known as the graduated bob, the stacked bob features longer lengths at the front, graduating to shorter hair at the back. “It’s a very ‘rounded’, full-bodied bob but it’s made softer and less harsh with the inclusion of layers,” Andy Heasman, Creative Director at Rush Hair, tells us. “The layers emphasise the roundedness of the bob, giving it an almost ‘stacked’ appearance, as well as texture, and a more effortless finish.”
But is this look perfect for all clients? “This haircut is particularly great for those who have fine hair that want to give the illusion of more body and volume,” adds Andy. “It also looks beautiful on all face shapes, but particularly on those with rounder face shapes as the longer length at the front of the face helps to create the illusion of a more elongated face shape.” Plus, “it can be softened with a fringe or some shaping around the face,” Melissa Timperley, owner of Melissa Timperley Salons, Manchester, tells us.
When asking about maintenance, Andy Smith, Global Ambassador for Indola, says the look is quite versatile, explaining: “It’s a medium maintenance hairstyle that looks cool when tucking behind the ear and leaving to air dry, but it’s also still long enough to style with some wave and movement.”
Get The Look
To create this look, Andy tells us: “You should firstly cut the perimeter and lower sections at the back of the nape area. Then, taking the hair in sections, cut in a 45-degree angle working from the middle of the back, outwards. Bulk can be removed by point cutting whilst also starting to add a slight texture to the hair before you go in and create the layers.”
But it’s all about adding that modern twist. “It looks great when paired with a short, wispy fringe and styled with waves to give the cut a further ‘cool girl’ texture and finish,” highlights Andy. And what client doesn’t want that cool girl vibe?
