The secret of shaun hall's stunning hair image
It takes more than great hair to make stunning hair photography. You also need great styling, a fantastic model and just the right pose.
This image, part of the collection that won HJ's 2009 Newcomer of the Year award for Shaun Hall of Mark Leeson, Hair, Body & Mind, ticks all of the right boxes.
We asked each of the image's stakeholders to give us their opinion on what makes this look so effective.
Hair stylist
Shaun Hall
"I love this image as it plays around with textures and techniques. It is still polished, but shows versatility - incorporating crimping, plaits, and hair up. Finally, it's all fused with great colour for a really directional look."
Photographer
Andrew O'Toole
"Photographically, this shot has a really strong composition. It has a feminine shape, with an injection of energetic youth. I think it works well as it embodies Shaun's fresh vision. Additionally, the colour palette has these amazing cool tones throughout, with no bright colours to detract attention."
Styling
Bernard Connolly
"There is so much attitude and edginess to this image. I wanted to use pieces that didn't distract from the intricate styling of the hair but that also added to the young, rock-glam feel. The bangles add a cool urban edge to the image and emphasise the look perfectly."
Make-up artist
Kylie O'Toole
"Attitude oozes from this shot - especially from the eyes. I used black liquid eyeliner to give that winged effect and smudged cool smoky kohl below. I kept the rest of the skin nude to draw attention to the eyes and really set off the look. Overall, it is a stunning image."
