HJi speaks to a selection of inspirational rising hairdressing stars who have already made an impact on the industry.
Katie Mulcahy
Katie Mulcahy is the art director at Lisa Shepherd Salons in Birmingham. The 26-year-old is often called upon to present shows and seminars around the world.
"As soon as I qualified as a hairdresser, I became obsessed with the creative side of the industry. At the age of 19, I entered my first competition and won. This boosted my profile and pushed me to do other things. Winning gave me great opportunities and experiences in photo shoots and stage work."
"I joined Lisa Shepherd Salons three years ago, which is where I got my real break. I joined the FAME team and got the chance to learn from other greats in the industry and the opportunity to travel the world."
"I first appeared on stage at the age of 19 and was terrified, but as soon as it was over I was hooked. I still get nervous now, which isn't a bad thing as it shows I still care about what I do."
"Being on stage is the best way of getting your thoughts across, but more importantly your personality. There is a great sense of achievement when coming off stage after a show. I do a lot of presenting work and never stop learning. I took part in a presenting course where we were filmed; it's interesting because you never usually get to see yourself and I came away with much more confidence and knowledge."
"When you're on stage the adrenaline kicks in and gives you a buzz, plus watching other people enjoying what you do is so satisfying and rewarding. I have always enjoyed watching people present, not only hairdressers, but on television too, and I think that observing others can help you develop your own style. I have been on a few courses which were great for the theoretical side and to help give structure to my presentation work. I think the main thing is to show your personality - that's what I try to do every time."
What advice would you give to other youngsters?
"See as many presentations as you can - Salon International is great for that. Believe in yourself, you can do it! Begin with small platforms to gain confidence and then work your way to bigger and better things. Remember to practice constantly."
