HJi speaks to a selection of inspirational rising hairdressing stars who have already made an impact on the industry.
Raychel Farren
Raychel Farren, 23, is a senior stylist at Mode in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, and was the winner of 2010 Clothes Show Young Hairdresser of the Year.
"The Clothes Show Young Hairdresser of the Year was my first competition. I thought it would be a great learning experience to compete alongside other talented individuals."
"The live final at the Clothes Show event at the NEC Birmingham was nerve-racking, but exhilarating. I tried to keep my look wearable but individual, and looked at catwalks, magazines and celebrity icons to ensure it was on-trend. Looking at the other contestants really spurred me on; the standard was really high. Part of my prize was taking part in a cover shoot with HJ and Your Hair, with Errol Douglas as the mentor on the day."
"I was excited to create a cover image, but to work with someone like Errol as well was amazing. He was brilliant and I learned a lot from him on the day - he gave me some great tips and taught me some new techniques which I have since used in the salon. My goal is to be well-known for the images I create and hopefully this sets me on course to realise that dream. I love hairdressing and all aspects of my job."
"Now I've had a taste of what it is like to work on photo shoots and with inspirational people, I can't wait for the next one!"
What advice would you give to other youngsters?
"Bring all your inspiration together and get a clear vision of what you want to create, not just in the hair, but in the overall image. If you enter Clothes Show Young Hairdresser of the Year - keep it wearable but individual, so it stands out from the rest."
