Sensitive, itchy scalps cause embarrassment as well as discomfort for many people. If the problem is frequent or sustained, it could indicate food intolerance, so recommend that clients are tested for allergies or experiment with their diet to find the culprit.
Underlying health problems can also cause scalp irritation, although this is much rarer.
"There may be a slight liver dysfunction, necessitating liver function tests via a doctor," says trichologist Glenn Lyons.
"The unfortunate part about an itchy, irritated scalp is that after a while it becomes habitual - scratching can have a psychologically calming effect."
The initial way to tackle this problem, says Glenn, is to use targeted products.
"Encourage clients to try a specific shampoo for flaky, itchy scalps on a daily basis for two weeks, together with a flaky scalp toner. It is more than likely that this will clear up the problem."
In terms of style, Beverly C recommends longer locks. "Short haircuts should be avoided as they can expose parts of the scalp, making clients feel more conscious of any redness and sore areas," she says.
