Tackling mature hair problems: brittle hair

According to trichologist Glenn Lyons, the amount of chemicals used on ageing hair can contribute to dry, fragile locks.
"It is true that the older we get, the less sebum we produce," he says. "However, this is not the cause of extra dryness, but rather the use of more chemical processes like colour, lightening, straightening and perms. The hair tends to become finer, so more styling aids are used to create body and volume. These can further dry out the hair if used incorrectly."
However, the good news from Glenn is that it is possible to reverse dryness in the hair.
"This can be done using scalp and hair masks," he explains. "They should be used on a weekly basis to start with and then twice a month. Advise clients to knead the scalp for 30 seconds before shampooing, and then apply the mask, massaging it in for five minutes. It's also advantageous to use a protective styling aid when blow-drying."
Beverly C agrees on the importance of product choice for dealing with this issue. "Advise your clients to invest in good quality conditioners and masks to hydrate and moisturise their hair on a daily basis," she says.
"I would also recommend they have a cut that is easy to maintain and needs little styling with heated appliances, as heat will only dry the hair out more. With colour, intense procedures like bleaching should be avoided and softer colourants and demi-colours recommended."
Lifestyle changes can also help to combat fine, weak hair. "Bear in mind that hair is a protein," says Glenn. "Recommend that clients eat high-quality protein like meat, fish, poultry and eggs, especially for breakfast when energy levels in the hair follicles are at their lowest. Protein supplements and multi-vitamin and mineral tablets can also offer long-term help."
