Helmet hair might not be a pressing concern for the competitors in the Tour de France, but with more women than ever getting on their bikes, looking chic as you cycle is a topical challenge.
According to British Cycling - the governing body of the sport - some 525,000 women in England currently cycle at least once a week and just under 1.2m women in England cycle at least once a month. Looking good definitely isn't the most important aspect of a healthy and fun activity, but if you're commuting to work, stepping off with sweaty helmet hair becomes more of an issue.
We spoke to one of our favourite cycling hairdressers for their advice on how to tackle the problem...
1. A French plait or fishtail plait will keep hair out of your way. After your cycle, you can take it out and you will have a nice soft wave.
2. Secure your hair in a sleek ponytail.
3.
Invisibobbles are great as you can secure your hair as tight as you like and it won't mark your hair.
4. If your hair is dry or naturally curly, apply lots of oil to keep it hydrated.
5. Fine and lank hair can be revived afterwards with a dry shampoo like Schwarzkopf Professional BC Volume Boost Refresher Spray.
6. For men, it's advisable to dry the hair flat prior to their cycle. After the helmet is removed, apply a moulding paste and texture the hair with the product.
7. For short/mid-length hair, applying a product such as Schwarzkopf Professional Dust It to the hair will keep a good bounce and texture after your bike ride is finished.
