‘Bobsessed’: The Latest Summer Bob Trends According to TikTok

Published 20th Jul 2023 by Sian Jones

New research has revealed the latest bob trends and French girl bobs are leading the way in this summer’s breaking hair trends, with 137M views on TikTok, and an average of 4,700 monthly searches on Google.

There are 721M views for regular ‘bob haircuts’ worldwide, and the pixie bob haircut is also back by popular demand. It’s currently up 60% in online searches, with around 2,700 searches a month, and 16.4M views on TikTok.

According to the latest Pinterest Predicts Report, searches are also up 550% for ‘chopped bob haircuts’. Pinterest claims this is all part of the ‘micro makeover’ trend taking over in 2023 – where clients are ditching the ‘maximalist’ look and opting for alternative ways to make a statement.

All Things Hair (from the Hair Experts at Unilever) analysed a number of trending bob cuts, from French girl bobs to more romantic, windswept Italian styles, across TikTok, Pinterest, and Google search, to reveal client's latest ‘bobsessions’.

The most popular bob styles this summer according to TikTok are:

Hailey usually opts for a semi-styled, silky bob, and we are so here for the waves! The ‘lob’ as it’s best known, has a huge following on TikTok too, with 15.3M hashtag views for #lobhaircut.

Racking up 16M views on TikTok, along with 2,700 monthly Google searches, the pixie bob is one of the most sought-after styles on the list. This bob oozes confidence and is perfect for anyone looking for a low-maintenance hair makeover this summer. Victoria Beckham recently teased her 30.9M Instagram followers with a story of her showcasing a blonde pixie cut, just like her 90s days!

The Micro Bob

Views for #microbob are still in the millions, indicating that the bob hairstyle is here to stay. Emily Ratajkowski made headlines earlier this year when she chopped off her once-long locks and opted for a French micro bob. Although it’s speculated that this could be a wig, fans went wild for her new cut and the jet-black fringe to match!

The French Bob styles for different face shapes

Commenting on the French Bob, Joe Sirry, Hairdresser and Co-owner of Shag! Salon London says: “It’s suited to people with more of a natural wave or curl to their hair, as straight or finer hair requires more styling to achieve the tousled look. With face shapes, we’d recommend the French Bob for narrower or more heart-shaped faces. For square or round face shapes, add bangs or soft feathering to cut off the corners.”

  • The Short French Bob - Shorter French bobs naturally elongate heart-shaped face types and chisel jawlines immediately!
  • Long Bob With Bangs – The experts say longer bobs with bangs is a must for square or round face shapes, enhancing the jawline. For that ultimate French girl definition, clients could also try an ombre bob in this style.
  • Blunt French Bob – Like most bobs, blunt French bobs compliment heart-shaped faces particularly well. But if your client's face is more square-shaped, then blunter bobs can still benefit their features – especially chin-length cuts. This emphasises cheekbones, rather than jawlines.
  • A Layered French Bob – Layered French bobs are a go-to for round shaped faces, with layers allowing for the widest part of the face (the cheekbones) to take centre stage, whereas blunter, bolder cuts could steal the limelight according to the experts.

Joe Sirry says, “The French Bob is the perfect cut for the recent wave of clients embracing their natural texture instead of the previously seen blunt, straightened bobs. Plus, people love cutting their hair off generally in summer.”
