Stranger things "steve 'the hair' harrington" returns
With the fourth season of Stranger Things back on Netflix (minus the episodes we’re all waiting for), it got us reminiscing. Can you remember when actor Joe Keery, best known for playing Steve Harrington in Netflix hit Stranger Things, previewed a new hairstyle. And Stranger Things fans were not happy. Now, we’ve seen Joe turn back to his old roots with the return of his voluminous ‘do. And fans are officially obsessed, with many on Twitter referring to him as, "Steve ‘The Hair’ Harrington."

The return of the messy mop

And it seems, fans can't get enough of it. “Steve Harrington’s hair is the only reason I started watching Stranger Things, and no you can’t question it,” stated one person on Twitter. Another fan tweeted: “More guys should cut their hair like Steve Harrington, just saying.” Many fans are also keen to grow their luscious locks to try out his iconic hairstyle, with one fan tweeting, “The urge to do my hair like Steve Harrington is STRONG.” Which leads us to question, will this be the new trend for 2022? Or will it be these...

But was it a bowl cut though?

The then 27-year-old opted for his take on the bowl cut, which was a bold departure from the long, 1980s inspired hairstyle he wears in Stranger Things. Joe displayed his drastic cut in LA while attending a dinner celebration for Chanel’s new fragrance, Gabrielle Chanel Essence back in 2019. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2ZrHJ3AfKw/ Joe's cut saw a couple of inches off and styled flat against the head - but the internet may have been wrong about the style being a bowl cut. "Joe has gone drastic and chopped off his messy mop, but this shock move is definitely not a classic bowl cut as the internet is describing it as," said Anne Veck, owner of Anne Veck Salons. "That style is too hard and clean cut, whereas the shorter finish has left layers which still give's Joe movement and makes the most out of his natural hair texture. Joe’s new look has a vintage Mick Jagger feel to it – carefree and au natural with minimal fuss. Joe has never been big on the polished look, and he’s brilliantly rocking the ‘I haven’t even tried’ feel." Anne continued: "What’s brilliant about this unpolished style is it can be worn raw or slicked back. The length still makes it versatile – it's a great non-committal style for people who want total freedom to change up their look day by day. Fiber from American Crew will give a medium hold but low on shine, so the natural hair texture is accentuated. Invisible styling is key." The so-called bowl cut was in the news of late in the celebrity world, with Charlize Theron sporting the style for her role as Cipher in The Fast and the Furious film franchise.

The reactions

Fans reactions to the new look were very mixed. “Joe Keery what did you do to your hair?” asked one person on Twitter. Another fan tweeted: “RIP Joe Keery's old hair. And a fourth joked: “Can I have everyone’s attention please, we are gathered here today to mourn the loss of Joe Keery's hair, you are gone but not forgotten, let us now take a moment of silence [sic].” Well, mourn no more, as Joe Keery's messy mop is back and it's looking better than ever. Did you know, Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown tried this TikTok hair trend?
