Kim Johnson and Michelle Sultan of Hype Coiffure in London won the title of HJ's Afro Hairdressers of the Year at the 2010 British Hairdressing Awards, and this stunning image is part of their winning collection.
We spoke to the people responsible for the pictureto find out what it takes to create an award-winning image.
Hairdresser
"This image is part of our monochrome collection based on simple shapes that are strong and powerful; the perfect fusion of femininity and masculinity. The subdued, natural texture and movement marry well with the shapes to create high-fashioned, edgy style with a cheeky twist, while remaining classic and timeless."
Make-up
"As a make-up artist, I get my inspiration from the lighting, clothing and hair - and this image is definitely an amalgamation of all of those aspects. They came together brilliantly and made our vision a reality. As the hair was very structured and powerful, I decided to create something edgy, but still beautifully classic, hence the strong eyebrows. They complement the styling, lighting and fit perfectly with the monochrome theme of the shoot."

Styling
"I took my initial inspiration from Janelle Monae, who is understated, sexy and balances femininity and masculinity perfectly; a great fit with Kim and Michelle's vision. I limited myself to a strict black and white palette to suit the monochromatic theme and to combine the looks into a collection. I was keen to direct the story away from an obvious masculine interpretation, so added a mixture of vintage and lingerie to create a balance."
Photographer
"I wanted the look to reflect a high-end fashion shoot, so took inspiration from fashion magazines such as Vogue and Dazed & Confused, and designers such as Tom Ford. Michelle and Kim decided that they wanted their images to be clean, classic and monochrome without being typically shot in black and white, so the styling and make-up were especially important. This image is so iconic and striking; the hair is strong and directional, and the shadows add beautiful texture to make the photograph really stand out."
