Why did you decide to enter the British Hairdressing Awards?

As a company, Rainbow Room International always like to stay at the forefront of hairdressing and fly the flag for Scottish Hairdressing.

When did you start thinking about your collection?

As the soon as the Christmas rush is over we start to think about our next British Hairdressing Awards collection! The artistic team gets together in January and start working on new ideas for the forthcoming year.

What was your budget for the shoot?

Last year our Budget was £30,000; from this we did two amazing collections for both Scottish Hairdresser of the Year and Artistic Hairdresser of the Year team.

How did you find a photographer, stylist and makeup artist?

For the last three years I have worked with John Rawson, I have always admired his work and have formed a great relationship with him. He introduced me to James O'Reilly (make-up) and Jared Green (stylist). We work together really well as a team.

How did you find models - what do you look for in a hair model, did you use professionals, how much did they cost?

John and I discuss my vision and from this he organises my casting at the Schwarzkopf Academy using all the leading agencies in London. This price varies from £400 for a half day upwards.

How long did it take from the day of the shoot to sending off a collection you were happy with?

I start my shoot in April and submit my pictures on the last week to ensure it is my favourite selection

How did it effect life in the salon - did your team get involved, did it mean you had to be away from the salon a lot?

The effect on the salon is amazing as it drives my team and keeps them inspired and motivated. I don't take time away from my salon as I do all my prep and research in my own time.

What three tips would you give to people considering entering the British Hairdressing Awards?

  • Do your research, be clear on your vision and ensure that it's communicated to the photographer, stylist and makeup artist.
  • Practice Practice, Practice.
  • Always have a Plan B

How, if at all, will you be marketing your win in the salon?

We work with our PR consultants to ensure we maximise media coverage in local, Scottish and trade press. We promote it within the company by creating window and mirror vinyls. We also use social media but the most important thing is our clients hear this and spread the news on our behalf.
