Schwarzkopf Professional and Hensmans Salons sponsored The University of Northampton Graduate Fashion Show for a fifth consecutive year, styling the hair for two shows at Silverstone Racecourse.

The end-of-year presentation was the culmination of a long and close collaboration between headline sponsors Schwarzkopf Professionals and Hensmans Salons and the university, including guest seminars and a competition based around the Essential Looks collection - the winners of which were announced on the night.

Before the show started, Stephen McDowell, national technical manager for Schwarzkopf Professional took to the catwalk to explain more about the fashion-based creative competition, which saw students design outfits inspired by the four trends from Essential Looks; Cool Hunters, Dark Angels, Hip Opulent and Sports Junkies.

"This evening you will see the culmination of a project that we have been working on with Hensmans and second year fashion students at the university," Stephen said. "We worked closely with the students from day one, all the time looking for four designs to match our hair trends. From 120 entries, we have chosen four designs which best represent Essential Looks - it's the best of young British talent in both hairdressing and fashion."

The four winning designs were then shown on the catwalk, with the Essential Looks trends perfectly executed by the Hensmans team.

Julie Hensman said "It's so rewarding to give our time and energy to these talented young graduates and all of our team members enjoy giving their all to this project. Our expertise is the perfect complement to their hard work and creativity and I am very proud of the
Hensmans team."

With the winners announced, it was time for the 'Making Britain Great' graduate fashion show to start. Held in the state-of-the-art Silverstone Wing, guests were able to enjoy panoramic views across the spectacular six kilometre racecourse from the glass-walled catwalk, as the sun set on one of the hottest days of the year.

The Hensman team created three distinctive looks for 34 models wearing the work of XX students, in the first fashion show ever to take place at the historical circuit. Representing current trends while still working worth the students' eclectic range of designs, the looks included a glossy high ponytail with a 1940s-style roll at the front, a textured plaited mohawk style and a sleek, side-parted style.

Collections ranged from skin-tight digitally printed bodysuits and gowns formed from reams of intricately knotted cotton to an urban-inspired pre-teen boys' range and a kitsch light-up collection - with hairstyles working perfectly for each.

With the show over, head of fashion and textiles Vicki Dean gave a closing speech.

"Silverstone has a proud heritage of innovation and excellence - two principles echoed by the students whose work you have seen tonight. We are so grateful to our headline sponsors. Not only are Hensmans and Schwarzkopf a perfect brand fit for us but they show real interest in our students and that's great motivation for everyone involved."
