Sassoon present a studio 54 inspired celebration at salon live

From the mirror ball that topped the stage to the retro roller disco finale, Sassoon Academy Salon Live Show at Salon International was a celebration of the Studio 54 disco vibe of the late 70s and early 80s and its co-relationship with punk culture. In a departure from the relaxed vibe of recent seasons, the Creative Team presented hair with a sexy, slinky glamorous feel in their UltraViolet Salon Collection and Plastic Academy Collection. “This is expensive looking hair,” International Creative Director Mark Hayes told the audience. First to present the latest trends and techniques were the International Colour Team, who showed how to use the Sassoon veil to add dimension, movement and shadow to hair. Eye-catching looks included a yellow veil over a coppery gold base to create a colour pop through the top and perimeter colouration that injected lavender accents around the edge of a beautifully-textured creamy blonde creation. “It always amazes me how much geometry there is in Sassoon colour even though the end result is very fluid,” said Mark as the team worked live on stage. Next on stage were the International Creative Team who discussed how influences as diverse as the 1920's Parisienne box bob, Patti Smith and the movement of hair in fashion illustration helped to develop the collection that is currently being taught in their London Academy. Hairstyles were classic with a modern twist, including beautiful bobs styled with a rebellious edge, long hair brought up to date with a shattered, tiered fringe and, of course, some of-the-moment Sassoon androgyny. As well as high tempo presentations of the two collections, Ultraviolet and Plastic, there was another cutting masterclass from Mark, who revealed that he will be teaching an exciting new Cutting Hair with Mark Hayes course at the Academy in 2019. He gave a classic Sassoon coupe sauvage an edgy update and explained: “There is no such thing as a classic or a creative haircut. Every hair cut is creative. Creativity is suitability.” The thrilling climax was the Studio 54 disco moment, as a soundtrack of  New York anthems blasted out, the stunning models were joined by a roller disco skater to bring a fun factor to the fabulous Sassoon party.
