Red carpet looks from the palm springs international film festival

Following last weekend's People's Choice Awards, award season continued on Saturday with the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala.

As the year's first major event honouring the film industry, the awards offer the first indication of how critics may vote at the Oscars.

Although Black Swan isn't out yet in the UK, the film has already won huge recognition in the states for its star Natalie Portman, who took the award for best actress at the weekend.

The film, a physiological thriller about a ballerina, features incredible costumes by designers Rodarte. Many designers took inspiration from the world of ballet for Spring/Summer 2011, with labels such as Chloe showing collections featuring dance-wear inspired skirts and dresses.

And Natalie stuck to the ballerina theme for her red carpet appearance, wearing her hair in a neat, low bun.

Helen Mirren was on hand at the event to present Colin Firth with the Desert Palm Achievment Actor Award for his role as King George VI in the much-hyped The King's Speech.

Her trademark pearlescent grey hair appears slightly longer than usual, and I love the flattering face-framing layers that form a wispy fringe.

Meanwhile Carey Mulligan, who took the Breakthrough Performance Award styled her bob in a cute flicked-out style, complete with soft sweeping fringe.

The actress recently explained that after having cropped her hair for a film role, she is desperate for it to grow back - and apparently using a Kerastase supplement in a bid to boost her barnet.

Actress Amy Adams also attended the awards to present an award, and as usual her trademark auburn locks were in top condition.

Somewhat resembling Disney's Little Mermaid in her aqua marine dress, Amy's curly red style proves that the slicked-back look can work well on the red carpet, with the essential addition of some height around the crown.
