Red carpet glamour at the mobos
The MOBO Awards always attracts a stylish crowd, and the 2010 show was no different.
Guests included Michelle Williams, Alesha Dixon and even controversial X Factor contestant Gamu - but who got it right, and who looked a fright?
We asked award-winning hairdresser Michael Barnes to cast his eye over some of the most glamorous hairstyles of the night.
Strictly Come Dancing presenter Alesha Dixon rocked up the red carpet in a daring, Gaga-inspired gown. Featuring cut-out panels and pointy shoulders, as well as a carpet-sweeping train and garish pattern, this outfit demands a simple 'do.
"Alesha's opted for quite a severe style," says Michael. "But she can certainly pull it off, no doubt helped by the fact that her hair looks really shiny and healthy."
Glamour girl Alex Curran represented Liverpool's WAG community at the Scouse city's Echo Arena. In a daring leopard print dress and strappy Louboutin's, some fashion commentators have criticised Alex for wearing the exact same outfit as fashionista Chloe Sevigny.
But what about her hair? "I don't like the colour very much," says Michael of this typically WAG-ish hue, "but the finish is very glam."
Meanwhile, Tulisa from award-winners N Dubz didn't impress: "What is this?" laughs Michael. "She needs a lesson in personal presentation! It looks messy and not in a good way."
A chic and sophisticated Corinne Bailey Rae proved that red carpet dressing isn't all about flashing the flesh, in a demure black gown and understated makeup. Her hair was left natural, with curls enhanced with just a touch of bounce.
"I really like this style," says Michael. "It's a bit different."
Ex-EastEnders star Preeya Kalidas opted for razzle dazzle, in a heavily sequinned gown and glittery facepaint highlighting her gorgeous eyes.
"Her hair is really shiny, and in gorgeous condition," says Michael. "But it's a bit samey, and nothing stand out."
Controversial X Factor finalist Gamu Nhengu made headlines when she made a surprise appearance at the MOBO Awards.
She played it safe in black velvet with a simple pendant, and Michael was equally unconvinced by her au naturel locks.
"I think Gamu's hair is a really nice shape," says Michael. "But it looks a bit frizzy."
Destiny's Child star Michelle Williams took a break from Strictly Come Dancing for a trip to the MOBOs, and showed the rest of the guests how real A-listers dress for the red carpet.
Her floor-length sequinned gown certainly got people talking, but what about her hair? "I'm not sure about this fringe," says Michael. "It makes her hair look a little bit like a wig." Well, if this sneak-preview of her next Strictly performance are anything to go by, perhaps it is!
Rochelle Wiseman of the Saturdays was at the MOBOs to cheer on her man, Marvin of JLS. The band went home with two awards - but did Rochelle's look win over Michael? "Rochelle looks fantastic," he says, "and super glamorous."
