Recreate These Hair Looks from the 2024 Oscars

Published 15th Mar 2024 by Josie Jackson

The 2024 Oscars were a spectacle of extended silhouettes, extreme proportions, clavicles, floating straps, so much glowing skin and too many carats to count…so with all that going on, hair was pretty simple. The good news is some of the styles are easily adaptable for salon guests.

“It was hard to choose a favourite look this year, but I can see clients asking for Florence Pugh’s beautiful deep side part bob with an undone cool girl wave, and Emily Blunt’s high bun adorned with a ruffled fishtail braid giving it a touch of edge but still up for the occasion,” explains Anna Peters, Sam Villa ArTeam member.

Florence Pugh’s Bob

  1. Start with a deep side part and apply a root lifter or volume spray at the base in 1” sections throughout the deep part side. With a finishing brush, lift roots up and follow with the nozzle of blow dryer for maximum volume. Anne recommends Sam Villa’s Signature Series 9-Row Finishing Brush.
  2. To create this effortless glam texture, it’s important to take sections of hair randomly working up towards the head. Use a straightening iron and with 1”-2” sections of hair, hold iron vertically and round hair forward creating a wave then half way down the strand switch directions rounding hair back to form a beautiful wave pattern that is not too curled. Lift and spray finishing hairspray at the base of deep side part.
  3. If hair is long, at this point gather hair at nape loosely, not stretching out the texture or brushing through, just gather with hands. Secure loosely with elastic, shake a little to release any front layers and pull until desired “bob” length is showing from the front. Tie a loose sparkling bow around elastic. Finish with shine spray all over.

Emily Blunt’s High Bun

  1. Working with a natural texture and a paddle brush, brush hair up into a high ponytail. Secure with hair bungie. Split ponytail into two equal sections.
  2. Wrap first section around base of ponytail creating a full bun, and pin in place.
  3. Create a fishtail braid through second section, pinch at ends and carefully pull each strand of braid out a little, creating fullness and softness. Secure with elastic.
  4. Wrap fishtail all around bun and pin to secure. Finish with hairspray of your choice.

Meanwhile, Katie Allan, celebrity hair stylist and founder of MAYFIVE Hair, was a fan of Zendaya’s ‘Mob Bob’, sharing: “We are seeing more and more bouncy shapes created instead of beach waves.”

  1. Prep the hair before blow-drying; when hair is 50% dry, use a volumising product like L’Oreal Pli before taking sections from the roots to the ends. Make sure you add in your side parting.
  2. Continue to dry the hair in the shape of the parting with a large, soft brush to turn the ends.
  3. Once the hair is dry use a hot brush and wrap the hair around in sections, starting at the top of the parting and working your way down. As you take the hot brush out, clip the hair into barrels whist it cools.
  4. Once the hair has cooled in the barrels, release it and use a large soft brush to smooth the hair out and spray into place using a medium hold hairspray.
