Propaganda Hair Group in Austin, Texas combines the clean, modern lines of loft living with homely touches for a space that's urban yet comfortable.
As the first business into the premises, owners Lati and Sara Domi had an empty shell within which to bring to life their dream salon.
"We wanted the salon to feel like a loft and have an open feel," says Sara. "We have worked in many places that are not well organized so our goal was to design a space where we could conceal cords and literally have storage built into the walls and the design. We wanted to be an upscale, modern salon that maintains a clean, comfortable environment for our clients."
The concept of a clean, clutter-space impacted many of the decision of the look and feel of the salon. An overall neutral palette was decided on, with mixed textures to bring to life the space. Concrete floors, walnut cabinets and glossy white shelves create interest, as well as a discrete division of spaces.
Custom-made furniture in walnut - the salon's biggest spend - has helped maintain a streamline space, as well as bringing warmth to the space. "All the storage is built inside of the walls," says Sara. "Everywhere you see walnut, it’s hidden storage! The cost to replace the wood is expensive because you can’t just replace one drawer front, for example. The entire wall would have to be replaced because the grain runs horizontally. Without it though, it would most likely feel cold and sterile."
