Housed in a century-old building in the heart of historic Barcelos, Portugal, Porta Nova salon is unique to the region thanks to a careful, considered refit of the premises.
Owner Bruno Reis partnered with his brother, Filipe, for the project. Previously a style director at TONI&GUY in cities including Frankfurt and Bahrain, this was a return to his roots and the thoughtful design reflects this.
The former dentist office was "a little old and dusty", according to Bruno. "But the location was amazing and I was attracted to the fact that the space was on the first floor. It's the best spot in the city."
Working with his brother, Bruno created a design that was cosy and welcoming, with a retro but minimal feel. "I wanted to reflect the cosy atmosphere of our home," says Bruno. "I used dark emerald greens and browns, recovered the original wooden floor of the building (which is more than 100 years old) and kept it plain white on the walls."
This vintage mood was reflected in the furniture, most of which was sourced second hand. There are modern touches, though. Cutting chairs and salon furniture come from Maletti, with designs by Philippe Starck specifically selected to coordinate with the antique finds.
Bespoke pieces were also used; handmade curtains from Switzerland and Nordic-inspired furniture in the reception area, designed by Bruno and made by a local company.
