Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling goes to dallas buyers club Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling Goes to Dallas Buyers Club The 2014 Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling has been won by Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews, who created the looks for Dallas Buyers Club. Working with a budget of just $250, the duo created memorable looks for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto as they portrayed two very different characters living with AIDS in the 1980s. The minuscule budget was used to transform Matthew into real-life activist, Ron Woodroof, and Jared into transexual Rayon. As well as creating the striking makeovers, Adruitha and Robin had to capture the ravages of the illness on a daily basis as filming was non sequential. Robin told Vanity Fair:
We had to take them back and forth from their sickest look to their healthiest look, up to five times in one day. They maintained that 40-pound weight loss throughout. So when you see them in the film, and they look like they’re 25 pounds heavier and healthier because of the medication, that’s just makeup.”
This is the second year that the Academy Award has been extended to included hairdressing as well as makeup, following a hard-fought campaign by celebrity stylist Ted Gibson.
