Ombre hair is making a comeback for 2020 – are you ready for it?

She may have launched two new collections for her brand SKIMS this week, but Kim Kardashian West's new ombré hair is what’s really got us talking. Both Kim and sister Kendall Jenner have been seen on Instagram rocking ombré hair recently. Celebrity hairstylist and Colour Wow creative director Chris Appleton took Kim's block colour to a cool chocolate blend.

What is ombré hair?

Ombré hair is a style that is created with the gradual blending of one colour into a lighter hue, typically from dark at the roots to light at the tips. It differs from balayage as balayage is a technique while ombré is a look. You can create ombre hair by using a freehand balayage technique. This creates a long lasting look without a harsh root line. The trend gained popularity throughout the 2000’s but particularly in 2014 when celebrities such as Beyoncé, Chrissy Teigen and Miley Cyrus took on the look. So how can ombré be taken further in 2020?

Aveda UK colour ambassador and owner of Perfectly Posh Hair, Krysia West says, “The classic ombré trend has been updated as we move into 2020. Ribbon highlights are much like ombré and this technique is a great way for clients to give their hair movement and shine but is a low maintenance hair colour service.” Carly Price partner stylist at Muse of London agrees, stating, “For 2020 I think that pairing the balayage technique with highlights will become more popular to further enhance the hair and make it lighter and brighter, as well as face-framing and using hand painting techniques to apply colour around the face, allowing client’s features to really pop and standout.”
