Mark Coray, president of the National Hairdressers' Federation, has responded to Labour leader Ed Miliband's plans for a major shake-up of vocational education.

"The NHF very much welcomes Ed Miliband's recognition that employers have a crucial role to play in setting standards in apprenticeships and ensuring vocational qualifications deliver relevant, high-quality training for young people.

"It is right that employers have a more direct stake in how standards are set and how money is spent when it comes to vocational training.

"Hairdressing as an industry is deeply committed to the training of young people and this is something salon owners have long been calling for.

"We look forward to a constructive engagement with the Labour party on this issue but we shall also continue to work with all the political parties to ensure that the needs and the expertise of small and micro businesses are recognised in the delivery of vocational training."

The Labour party are proposing to introduce a new vocational qualification for students who don't want to study A-levels at 16 for the "forgotten 50 per cent" of young people who don't go on to study at university.
