New York Fashion Week is well under way with shows for the Spring/Summer 2012 season currently taking place.

Although there's a week of shows still to go, here are some of the most prominent hair trends from the first few days.

Waves

Waves and texture are a perennial summer favourite, recreating the natural movement caused by sun, sand and sea air.

For Spring/Summer 2012, New York city girls embrace beachy texture, but give it a town-friendly finish with gloss and definition.

At Luca Luca (left), long loose waves were topped off with knotted turbans for a holiday-ready style. A high-shine finish and defined lengths ensure this look is more beach babe than boho.

The DKNY girl (right) celebrates summer in the city, so although there's still texture and hair has a polished feel. Giant sunhats topped off each model's ensemble.

Top Knots

Buns and top knots placed high on the crown continue to be a catwalk favourite, showing off stylish ensembles with a no-fuss but high-fashion look.

Ideal for sweltering summer holidays, this season's bun takes a cue from the streets of London and New York where gals about town scrape their hair high up, with an unfinished edge.

At LAMB (left), models had roughly scooped up styles with loose tendrils framing the face, while at Jen Kao (right), the very lengths of hair were left out of the knot for a dishevelled finish.

Wet Look

The wet look is fast becoming a trend for the season - after just a few days of shows, we're already seeing the slicked-down, product-heavy style appearing time and time again.

At Helmut Lang, models had their dripping-wet lengths scraped back in to ponytails with a loose knot at the nape. Matching the fluidity of the draped outfits, this high summer look oozes sex appeal.

Victoria Beckham channelled the trend at her show too, although the look was more high shine than soaking wet. Hair was scraped back from the crown and clamped in place with a simple grip, with lengths left textured.

For a more wearable take on the trend, models at Tommy Hilfiger showed off high-shine, lacquer-look hair with a simple, precise centre parting and no frizz or fuss.
