The last few seasons have seen models making their mark with striking cuts and colours - statements that ensure they stand out on the catwalk, rather than resembling the chosen homogenised look of the season.
From
the Karlie cut to
the white-blonde wash that has dominated this season, making a statement no longer means losing work for models in-demand. Personality is key and identity is everything; who wants to blend into the crowd when you can be an individual?
This season's most-talked about colour belongs to Arizona skater-girl Natalie Westling, who saw her career sky-rocket after switching her brunette lengths for bright red. And we mean bright.
Natalie
told the New York Times that her new look was down to 'bleach, two types of toner and Manic Panic' - and what a result! Sure, this kind of shade can lose models work thanks to its striking finish and potential clash with clothes, but for some designers this kind of punky independent spirit is the perfect fit for the brand.
So far this season, Natalie has walked for namse including Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs (
who also made her the face of his campaign, alongside Miley Cyrus), Anna Sui and
Prabal Gurung - where she rocked head-to-toe red, quite literally.
Fancy trialing the trend? Izzy Churcher, HOB Academy's senior technical educator says:
Natalie Westlings new statement hair colour is a nod to the catwalk for Spring/Summer 2014’s art-school colour palettes. This bright paprika red shade is easy enough to achieve on natural hair but the maintenance of intensive tone is high.
This edgy, attention grabbing hair is for clients looking to be noticed but who also want to be seen as alternative. This shade is best suited to clients who have a pale, rosy complexion with a blue/green eye colour.
