Super-salon owner Michael Van Clarke passed on his expertise, and shared that of his team, with his first Salon Business Mastery course on 17 Match. Attended by a small but high-profile group of salon owners in the intimate surrounds of Michael’s new presentation room, the day offered an invaluable insight into how Michael Van Clarke has grown to become a multi-award winning salon – including 16 wins at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards. One of Michael’s proudest achievements is the longevity of his client list. He told delegates that he had not been able to rely on the cachet of being a TV hairdresser, but instead had built the salon’s reputation through offering exemplary service, news of which had been spread by word of mouth. “We have 100 clients here that have been with me since I started as a stylist 34 years ago,” said Michael. Michael also took the opportunity to stress to delegates just how important the role of a hairdresser was, and how this should be passed onto team members. “As an industry we have become too obsessed with the fashion side of hairdressing when a hairdresser does so much more,” he said. “A good hairdresser is a life coach, a creative and performance artist, and entertainer and a well-being therapist.” Key team salon team members also spoke to delegates about their roles within the salon, offering further insight into what goes in to creating a genuine super-salon, including operations director Russell McGrath and international artistic director, Simon Bryer. Delegates finished the day with a thorough knowledge of how the salon operates, right down to the performance charts on the staff room walls and the complementary perfumes in the lavatories. The day finished, in true Michael Van Clarke style, with a glass of champagne in Michael’s family kitchen. Michael Van Clarke Business Mastery Course 2
