Proving that good things really do come in small packages, the bijou withDilan Manchester salon creates an intimate gallery atmosphere in the bustling surroundings of the fashionable Triangle shopping centre, just a stone's throw from Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Housed in a former jewellery kiosk, the bright, sophisticated salon demonstrates well what can be done in a compact space with some imagination. Although it was the greatest expense, inserting a full-glass frontage opened up the salon for a much more spacious feel. The open view in to the salon also enhanced owner Dilan Malalgoda's vision of a 'hair gallery'.  "My idea was to create the illusion of an artist's gallery," he explains. "Here, every haircut is viewed as a work of art by people walking past the salon." The minimalist interior allows for just one styling chair and one backwash unit, but rather than appearing cramped, the withDilan Manchester salon enjoys the feeling of a luxurious VIP room throughout. Clean, white walls and complementary off-white and cream furniture allude to the feeling of space, while halogen lighting adds to the bright, open finish. Furthering the boutique feel of the salon, the hand-picked furniture consists of vintage finds and quirky one-off pieces.

The best was buying the clock, as it's become a talking point. The worst was not buying two of the styling chairs when I had the chance; I want a replacement, and I can't get hold of another one.
