Mastering the art of the one-length cut - louis

It’s funny how you notice real cycles in the salon. At the moment, we’re in one of the quieter ones. That means that everyone is holding out until a bit closer to Christmas before their next appointment – I guess you could call it the calm before the storm! It’s not that it is empty, there is just a steady stream of people coming in rather than the constant flow that we’re used to. There’s still plenty for me to do, though. Besides my training has stepped up a notch, so some down-time to do things like watching training DVDs is much appreciated. On Monday, at Pangbourne, I had to do two cuts to assess whether I am where I should be in my NVQ training – I am! First I did a one-length cut with a big fringe for a friend of mine. She is someone who has really long hair and hates getting it cut, but she seemed to really like it. Then I did a more technical inverted layer cut. This is where you do the length and then section half the hair away and cut layers from the underneath sections. They are both really hard cuts – my trainer said that a one-length cut is the hardest cut you will ever do so because you have to get it really straight – so it was a bit of a learning curve, but I think it went okay. This Sunday, I’m off to Salon International and I’m really looking forward to it. I went last year when I was brand new to the industry and it was just such a buzz! It’s like you’re holding a video camera and whichever direction you point it in there is something going on. It’s going to be a great opportunity for me to learn more about the business, fashion and what’s been going on in the industry this year. I can’t wait…
