Manchester college awarded wella centre of excellence status Manchester College Award Wella Centre of Excellence Status Celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas recently visited The Manchester College to award Wella Centre of Excellence status to the Hairdressing and Beauty department. There are only 30 colleges nationally, including The Manchester College, which hold the prestigious status. Michael, who is the resident hairdresser on The One Show, spoke to hairdressing students about his career and how important education is to reach future career goals. He said: "Manchester is known as a centre of creativity for hairdressing and is a fantastic city. It is great that Wella have partnered with The Manchester College. This is the best place to give students a good start in their career and the support available is immense." "Education is crucial for young hairdressers, as I see a lot of hairdressers throughout the country who aren’t good enough because they haven’t had the training or don’t continue to train and keep up with new trends, products and tools. Hairdressing is a life choice and this will be with me forever. I am always looking at people’s hair." Paul Oscroft, National College Manager for Wella, added: "This is the start of our partnership with The Manchester College. We will work closely with the College to help with employability, building links with industry, the whole focus is around the students. We want to give them the best possible start in their career. We will work closely with tutors to ensure they continue to develop their skills and keep up with new techniques. Hairdressing is such a fast moving industry with new techniques and styles constantly changing." The Manchester College runs Hair and Beauty courses at four sites across Greater Manchester. The College and Wella have big plans for the future which includes opening a fully commercial salon to give learners the best possible work experience, developing staff to support and inspire learners, and continue to build strong links with Greater Manchester employers. Head of Hair and Beauty at The Manchester College, Liz Peters said: "Thank you to Michael for his support with our project and Wella in presenting us the Wella Shield. "The department has a vision to be the leading organisation of choice for Hairdressing, Media Make-Up, Beauty, Spa and Nail Technologies, for employers and learners in Greater Manchester.
