We're used to seeing her with her long brunette locks immaculately blow-dried into tumbling curls, but for a red carpet reception last night Kate Middleton opted for a sleek knotted chignon.

Style critics have been crying out for Kate to wear her hair up for a while now, so it's great to see her trying something new - even though her thick, long loose locks seem to be the envy of everyone.

The super-glossy style sees Kate's hair crossed over at the nape of the neck and plaited into an artful, elegant chignon.

I love that there's a bit of volume on top, keeping Kate's style from feeling dated or severe and injecting a slightly retro feel.

As we continue to see more of Kate throughout the Olympics, let's hope we see more of these looks - beautiful as her blow-dries may be, it's great to see that gorgeous hair put to good use in some elegant updos too.
