Julia roberts brings back iconic copper hair

American Sweetheart, Julia Roberts, has brought back her iconic copper hair, in a stunning throwback to the 90s and we can't get enough.

Whilst Roberts is no stranger to red hues, we all remember her copper curls in Pretty Woman and more recently auburn blow outs on the red carpet, but this time she has elevated her colour with vibrant, warmer tones stepping away from the golden, blonde highlights we've come to expect.

Although warm reds may (still) be stealing the spotlight this season, there's plenty of other colours that are high in demand if Julia Roberts' copper hair isn't on your clients' wishlist. If your clients want to stay on trend whilst steering away from these colours, the key is to keep to warm tones. "Ash blonde is dead," says Jack Howard, co-creator of the Jack Howard by Denman Precision Colouring Kit, but Siobhan Jones, L'Oréal Professionnel artist, offers an alternative, sharing the technique 'Fused Tone', which is all about intertwining cool and warm tones throughout one overall hair colour. She says: "The idea is that a copper, which typically would be named a warm colour, would not only have ribbons of warm, golden hues, but it would also be fused with cooler mahogany tones. The combination of warm and cool tones means the end result is more muted and dustier - and most importantly, it is a lot more accessible for both cool and warm skin tones."

Poppy Johnson, ambassador for Directions Hair Colour, notes, "My clients are bringing TikTok videos for reference now." So for clients who are ready to dive in and embrace this season's trend we've got some tips to help you manage their expectations whilst meeting their TikTok hair goals.

Copper Hair Tips From the Experts

  1. Brendan Blaine Palmer, technical educator with NAK, explains: "I always try to stay as close to my client's natural depth of hair colour as possible. So, if they are a five level, I will use a five level red, if they are a seven level, I will use a seven level red. It allows me to use the lowest possible oxidant and gentlest colour - keeping the hair in the best condition and ultimately resulfing in shiny, healthy hair."
  2. Kelly Shone-Adams, OSMO technical advisor, says: "We encourage clients to book in with a junior team member for a colour bath and blow dry. It's ideal for clients who don't want to apply treatments at home (such as OSMO Colour Revive) and is a great opportunity for our less experienced team to grow their clientele, too."
  3. Terry Longden notes: If a client wants a 'toned down' copper look, first find out of what their definition of a copper is. What may be a warm mocha or a gold tone to one client, can appear 'ginger' to another, especially when the client has only ever had blonde or cool ash tones previously."
  4. Jack Howard shares: A quick way to check what shade will suit your client is to check what jewellery the person is wearing. If they're wearing gold, warm tones are your best bet, and for silver fans, cool tones work best."
  5. Danilo Giangreco says: "Directing clients to use a sulfate-free shampoo is essential, as this will prolong their colour. Whilst you want your clients to rebook a colour service with you, if the results fade too fast, they will go elsewhere. The Revlon Re/start colour range sulfate-free shampoo and the colour protective mist are always my first recommendations.
