Janelle Monae is officially music's Next Big Thing - and we're not just talking about her hair...

The US star, whose single Tightrope hits the shops today, is arguably the coolest female artist on the planet at the moment. Her trademark enormous quiff and tomboy penchant for tuxedos and natty neckwear ensure she stands out in a sea of samey samey pop princesses.

Already flying high with the blessing of Outkast's achingly cool Big Boi - who provides guest vocals on the single - Janelle also comes with the backing of celeb fans Prince and P Diddy. Her funky brand of 60s-tinged hip hop is perfect for summer, so it's no surprise that the first single off the album is headed for the top of the charts this week.
