What were the premises formerly and what attracted you to the premises?
It was originally an old, run-down malthouse in the town centre. It was in need of a complete refurbishment and the position was ideal and included car parking!
How long did the work take?
9 months
What did you have in mind to create before work began - what were the aims?
Clean lines and the ability to create a comfortable space with brightness and no clutter. Of course other priorities were a steady flow of clients and the opportunity to merchandise the space effectively.
What major work had to be undertaken to prepare the premises and why?
Full plumbing, tiling, ceilings, and preparation of all areas, we also demolished some of the internal walls.
Were there any problems, including obtaining planning permission?
Planning was no problem internally, however the request for the proposed outside signage was rejected initially. We then had a redesign to ensure this could go through.
Who designed the salon?
Albert Ewan with collaboration from the aUK directors.
What is the colour scheme and why did you pick it?
Orange to keep things bright, sexy and fun.
Describe the lighting in each area, why it was chosen, and what effect it has?
All lighting is energy saving LEDs consisting of recessed strips and down lights, we wanted the space to be calm and inviting with even lighting levels. This helps make clients look their best in the mirrors too.
What is the floor made from and why?
The floor is large porcelain tiles. There was a big area to cover and we needed something bright and easy to maintain given the day to day wear and tear.
Describe the reception and the waiting area.
The waiting area consists of ‘soul’ seating in orange, alongside a juice bar so clients can relax and get comfortable as well as browse the retail offer.
Does the salon look different in separate areas and if so how and why?
We have created zones for the reception/juice bar, and then a clutter free hair salon with products behind sections to keep clean and tidy.
Is the salon meant to appeal to anyone in particular?
We wanted the feeling of opulence combined with a welcoming feeling of wellbeing and openness.
Describe the ceiling
The ceiling is white plaster board in recessed coffers. These surfaces provide the opportunity to use track lighting.
What are the most interesting features in the salon?
Bespoke neutral links, juice bar, pedi-spa and manicure areas.
Tell us about any special features in the salon.
We have iPad check-in podiums in the seating area to make clients feel relaxed and welcomed.
How many styling stations are there and how are they distributed?
There are 14 spaces and a colour back bar for ease of application and mixing colour.
What type of styling chairs go with them? Where did you buy them?
Albert Ewan Design-Pahi Georgia. These are functional, smart and comfortable.
How many backwashes are there?
Three in the centre of the salon with the added function of full massaging chairs.
How would you describe the salon's image?
Luxurious, sleek and unique.
