Patrick Wilson is a principle stylist at Electric Hairdressing at Harvey Nichols, Liverpool and a member of both the ghd Art Team and L'Oreal Professionel ID Artist Team 2013/14. Here we find out more about his career.
When did you decide you wanted to be a hairdresser?
From a young age I trained as a dancer and got into doing hair for the girls at our shows. It was just a natural progression to follow hair after that.
Where did you train?
I trained at Barbara Daley Hair & Beauty in Liverpool.
What was your first job like?
I got a great training behind me because I worked at this salon for five years. I first started as a trainee then passed my
trade test to become a stylist. I then developed to look after training and education for NVQ Level 1.
When did you move to Electric and what attracted you to the salon?
I moved to Electric in November 2013. It was a big move for me as I had only ever worked in the one salon, but I wanted to progress with my session and show work. I saw Mark Woolley and the Electric Art Team on stage at
Salon International and thought I had to apply when I found out he was opening up in my home town.
Do you ever feel pressure to move to London to progress your career?
I feel you can make a stamp wherever you may be, so living in Liverpool has not stopped me yet. London is only two hours on the train, so I can easily do it in a day. I would never say never, but at the moment I'm happy travelling up and down the country.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Doing the hair backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in London in 2014, assisting Akki with the ghd Art Team.
What’s your next career goal?
I have so many but on my list is: winning the L'Oreal Colour Trophy, winning Newcomer of the Year at the
British Hairdressing Awards and get agency representation by a London booker like
Premier or
Streeters.
What piece of advice would you give your student self?
Learn the basics before you can break them! Mould yourself into what you want to be and assist as many great stylists as you can. Work under the best within your salon and absorb as much as you can. When I was training, I constantly wanted to learn, I always had the dolls head out!
