Josh Denholm works at Reilly Denholm Creative Hair Designers in Leigh and is a member of the Paul Mitchell Artistic Team. His career has seen him present on stage in Las Vegas and contribute to education for Paul Mitchell - we find out more.
When did you decide you wanted to be a hairdresser?
I remember visiting Calum Grant salon in Edinburgh at the age of 12 and discovering that they were hiring Saturday team. I had always enjoyed my experience going there, so was thrilled when they asked if I’d like to come in for a trial. They hired me straight away. Within the first couple of weeks of my time there, I knew it was the career for me!
Where did you train?
I trained at Calum Grant, following their in-salon programme. I also completed the
Cheynes Sam programme, receiving my NVQ levels 1-3.
What was your first job like?
I stayed at Calum Grant for nine very happy years. I was very lucky that I had such an amazing team around me and they taught me so much. If I hadn’t moved further south, and eventually opened my own salon, I’d probably still be there!
When did you move in to your current role?
On the 7th January 2014 I took my career to the next level, buying my current salon – Reilly Denholm Creative Hair Designers with my partner Archie Reilly. It was a dream come true.
How did I develop your profile with Paul Mitchell to enjoy global opportunities?
I bleed black and white; Paul Mitchell has always been my product system of choice, right from working at Calum Grant. I joined the Paul Mitchell Artistic Team in 2006 and have never looked back. I have always taken constructive criticism, worked hard and never refused an opportunity, no matter how small. I am a huge advocate of education, and have always practised to become the best artist I can be, both on-stage and behind the chair. Being true to yourself, having fun and wearing a smile goes a long way.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Apart from opening my own salon at the beginning of 2014, I was honoured at an international Paul Mitchell training event in Las Vegas in 2014. Global artistic director Robert Cromeans presented me with their Rising Star award on-stage in front of hundreds of my hairdressing peers. That was very special.
What’s your next career goal?
To continue to grow my salon business and hopefully open more locations.
What piece of advice would you give your student self?
What you focus on is what you get. Education, practice and working hard get you far in this business.
