Binky from Rainbow Room International, Buchanan Street appeared in
Do or Dye: Hair Academy, the BBC Scotland salon documentary.
When did you decide you wanted to be a hairdresser?
At high school, we were fortunate enough to have hairdressing as a subject option. I jumped at the chance to try it, as I have always had a love for hair. After enjoying everything I learnt doing hairdressing at high school, I decided to apply to the Rainbow Room International Buchanan Street salon.
Where did you train?
I started attending night classes at Rainbow Room International before I went full time at their Buchanan Street salon. I loved everything about Rainbow Room International, they have such a professional manner but still keep work fun and there is never a day which is the same.
What was your first job like?
I have worked since my teens. I took up a paper round for extra money - which was very different from hairdressing! - then moved on to night classes at Rainbow Room International. Choosing hairdressing as a subject in high school made me realise how much I could see myself progressing into an excellent stylist and this kept me going.
When did you join Rainbow Room and what was it about the group that attracted you?
I joined Rainbow Room International in 2013. What attracted me to the group was their amazing hair shows and creative hair images – they are so inspiring! One of my friends also started with Rainbow Room International, so I think hearing her great feedback about the company pushed me in the right direction to join with them.
How did you feel when the opportunity to appear on Do or Dye: Hair Academy came up?
I was really excited about taking part in the show. We got asked if we would like to take part a few weeks beforehand. At the time I had only been with the Rainbow Room International company for three months. I was thrilled but nervous to be a part of the TV show. It was such a great opportunity that I couldn't pass up on, so I jumped at the chance to get involved.
How has appearing on the show boosted your career?
Appearing on the show has helped me get more clients through the door and fill up my column. My clients were all telling their friends, "my hairdresser was on TV!" Having more bums on seats has helped my confidence and given me the chance to meet a variety of people.
What’s your next career goal?
I can’t wait to qualify and hopefully (fingers crossed) be kept on at their Buchanan Street salon as a stylist.
What piece of advice would you give your student self?
Looking back, I would tell my student self to relax and that it is OK to make mistakes because you are still learning. Renèe, the Master Hair Designer at the Rainbow Room International Buchanan Street salon always tells me; "not to stress about it, because it's not happened yet."
