How to give the perfect wet shave
Wet shaves are an increasingly popular traditional service in men's salons and barbers. Chris Foster demonstrates the perfect wet shave for Scrummi Towels.
Step One: Ensure the client is properly gowned up using a medium-sized towel to prevent excess product from getting onto clothing.
Step Two: Clean the face to remove dead skin cells. This will avoid blocked pores and dull skin.
Step Three: Apply pre-shave oil for added protection. This works under the lather. Rub a little oil in the palm of your hands and massage into the wet beard, using circular motions.
Step Four: Apply a hot towel, ensuring it doesn't cover the client's nose. The hot towel hydrates and lubricates the skin while softening the beard.
Step Five: Time to lather up. Traditional lather should be applied with a brush. This method lifts the beard off the face and gently exfoliates dead skin cells.
Step Six: Shave in the direction of the growth. The first shave will remove 80% of hair length. If you want to go closer or the beard is thick, shave against the growth on the second lather. When the hair is shorter, there is less chance of razor burn, skin irritation or in-growing hairs.
Step Seven: Wipe excess product off the razor onto a towel before executing each stroke of the shave. The tension hand is placed behind the razor so that skin can be stretched or pinched before carrying out each stroke. This enables a close shave and reduces risks of cuts.
Step Eight: Prepare a cold towel by running it under cold water. Wrap the towel around the client's face to soak up shaving cream residue and cool irritated skin.
