But when you see a hair colour you love, how do you recreate the look? What should you ask for and how can you be sure that it will work for you?

Paul Mitchell editorial director Lucie Doughty gives the lowdown on Rihanna's hair and how you can get the look.

Rihanna has chosen tones that complement her gorgeous skin tone, something that your hairdresser can provide vital advice on and the golden hues in the picture give warmth to her skin tone.

What to ask for

When visiting the salon ask your stylist for a golden blonde, with some blonde buttery pieces woven through for added texture.

Make it work for you

If you have afro hair and wish to go lighter, your stylist should be able to differentiate between your hair type and any other for the best results.  All hair types have fine, medium and coarse within their range.

As with all colour services, your stylist will consider the texture of your hair, how thick it is and how porous it is from other chemical services. This will then determine how much lift you can expect and the size of the highlighted sections.
