Top Tips on Creating a Hairdressing Collection

How did you both start to work with each other on collections?

We work together at the TONI&GUY London Academy, and always love teaching on courses together, so three years ago we decided to collaborate on a collection for the first time. We were determined to create something both beautiful and innovative and as colleagues who work together every day, we found that our shared drive and complementary strengths pushed us to explore. It was an exciting challenge that ultimately brought out the best in the both of us.

What inspired you to do a colour collection?

We’ve always had a deep passion for colour. As International Technical Directors at the TONI&GUY Academy, we teach colour techniques to students every day, which only fuelled our enthusiasm further. Creating a colour collection felt like a natural next step for us. It was an opportunity to channel our expertise and creativity into designing stunning colour palettes that would stand out and inspire.

Do you both have the same style of work?

We actually have quite different styles, which is what makes our collaboration so unique. Michela’s approach to colour is bold and graphic, while Charley tends to favour a more natural and soft aesthetic. This contrast is what works so well for us – we balance each other out, blending our distinct styles to create something truly special.

What would you say each other's biggest strength is in regard to colour and collection work?

Michela is a visionary; she has a strong ability to craft the story behind each look, from the concept to the lighting and background, and her strength lies in colouring wigs and creating the perfect colour combinations for each look. Charley is brilliant at planning the bespoke colour palette for each model. She has an eye for colour placement that works seamlessly with the chosen palette, and her strength is in her methodical, clean approach to the entire process, as she is a true perfectionist within her work.

When putting together ideas for your British Hairdressing Awards collection, how did you both work on this as a duo?

We actually worked as a trio! We were lucky to have Elle Page, our talented stylist, who helped create the amazing shapes and textures in the collection. While pitching ideas to each other was challenging at times – since we all have such different approaches – we believe that open communication was key. By being honest about what we liked, what we felt, and what we envisioned, we were able to create a successful and truly collaborative collection. The final result is a reflection of all of us; it's the perfect blend of our individual ideas and styles.

Did you ever have disagreements over the direction you wanted your collection to go in?

Not really. We were always listening to and supporting each other throughout the process. From the beginning, we knew this collection wouldn’t follow just one direction—it would be the result of all our ideas coming together. It’s about collaboration, not competition and you learn so much from each other throughout the process!

What advice would you give to other hairdressers looking to collaborate on collections?

Allow the creative process to unfold naturally. It’s important to discuss ideas openly with your partner once you’ve had time to think them through. The perfect collaboration comes from truly understanding each other’s working styles, recognising your strengths and trusting that the other person will complement what’s missing. But most importantly remember to have fun!

What would you say is the most important aspect of creating an award-winning collection?

Preparation and adaptability. Be ready for anything, especially the unexpected. Having backup plans — A, B, and C — is key because on the day of the shoot, things might not go exactly as planned. It's crucial to stay flexible and find solutions in the moment. You also need to carefully consider every element of the shoot: the concept, lighting, photography, styling, and makeup. It’s all about creating a cohesive vision. Sourcing your models is another important part of the process; make sure they align with the concept you're bringing to life. Communication is essential, especially with the photographer. You need to ensure they fully understand your vision and the vibe you want to capture so that everything flows seamlessly.

What’s your favourite collection image and why?

Our favourite image would have to be Hidden Beauty. It's such a simple yet striking combination of colours; a luxurious blend of blonde tones, one gold and one silver. The clever placement of these colours creates a beautiful contrast, which adds depth and intrigue. The dent in the design gives it an unexpected edge and represents the beauty of imperfections. It’s both simple and striking, which is why we love it so much!
