The Head Hugging Afro is a timeless style that puts natural texture centre stage
Defined by its rounded silhouette and soft volume, it's an ideal choice for clients looking for a low-maintenance style that celebrates natural texture while maintaining a polished finish.
Here, Josh Woodman shares the Denman tools used to create this soft, rounded Afro...

Step 1
Working on clean hair begin sectioning above the ear with a Denman DPC1 pin tail comb.

Step 2
Using a conditioning spray, spray each section, taking time to fully hydrate the hair.

Step 3
Detangle each conditioned section using a Denman D90L Ultra Detangler, releasing the curl and bringing out the shape. Work up to the crown, repeat for the other side and then work nape to front hair line.

Step 4
To dry use a diffuser cup directing the air flow around the head not directly onto the hair. Continue to tease out the shape especially through the crown with the help of the Denman D17 Volumizer.

Step 5
For a snatched, clean look, place a little Vaseline at the hair line and then work around the whole hair line brushing back the hair with the Denman D91 Backcomber.

Step 6
Rework the shape with the Denman D17 Curl Volumizer and very gently mould with the hands for a final finish.

The result is an elegant, classic afro.
