How davines is spearheading sustainability in hairdressing

As part of HJ's Sustainability Week, we caught up with B-Corp Davines to hear how they are pioneering sustainable practices around the world – and how you or your salon can get involved.

B Corp Certification

Davines was awarded the prestigious B-Corp status in 2016. In order to be certified, a business must meet high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on employee benefits, right through to charitable giving to supply chain practices.

Davines are also founding members of the B Corp Beauty Coalition, working with 26 other B-Corp companies to improve social and environmental efforts within the industry, creating lasting systematic change towards sustainability.

Carbon Neutrality

In 2018, Davines achieved carbon neutrality in packaging for all of the group’s product lines, compensating CO2 emissions with the creation and protection of forests around the world. Davines supported the Ethio Trees project for the regeneration of forests in Ethiopia.

Davines is committed to become net zero by 2030. In their factories and offices, Davines only use electricity and thermal energy (biomethane) from renewable sources. These inexhaustible sources of energy do not emit CO2, do not pollute, and are renewable. Every product Davines formulate, design and produce are manufactured using clean energy.

Meanwhile, Davines’ Slow Food Presidium helps to rescue local farming practices and plant species that are at risk of extinction by utilising the biodiversity within their products to rekindle traditional farming.

Sustainable Packaging

Davines has joined forces with Plastic Bank, where it has removed 100 tonnes of plastic, and as of 2022, Davines is certified plastic neutral, meaning that for every product sold in 2022, the same amount of plastic dispersed into the environment will be removed.

Plastic Bank creates recycling ecosystems whereby collectors exchange plastic waste at local branches in exchange for bonuses that provide basic family necessities, such as groceries and clean drinking water.

Davines uses plastic packaging because unlike other materials, it allows for the lightest packaging designs, a large reduction in raw material and weight, and therefore lower CO2 emissions when transported.

Davines Eco-Cleans

In 2021, Davines partnered with On-Hand to organise litter picking teams from around the UK and Ireland. The campaign saw 42 one-hundred-litre refuse sacks of rubbish collected by Davines’s HQ team, salespeople, educators, ambassador Ashleigh Hodges and its distributor partners.

Building on last year's success, Davines is encouraging all salons to participate in their own Eco-Clean days. Want to get in involved and clean up the planet? You don't need to be a Davines Salon to participate – it's all about improving the environment for everyone.
