Hollywood stars and their hairdressers: in pictures Hollywood Stars and Their Hairdressers Hollywood stars and their hairdressers share a special bond - and no more so than in the golden days of film-making, when hours were spent perfecting a look which couldn't be faked with technical wizardry. Leading names like Alexandre de Paris and Sydney Guilaroff because household names thanks to their work styling stars like Grace Kelly (who named Alexandre her 'official hairdresser'), Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. And it wasn't just a male-dominated industry; Nellie Manley and Virginia Darcy were just two of the women preferred by Hollywood's leading ladies and winning awards and acclaim in the process. While Antoine de Paris was arguably the first 'celebrity' hairdresser, it was the birth of the Hollywood film industry that really launched stylists on to the stage as celebrities in their own right. In Michael Gordon's Hair Heroes book, Sydney is quoted as saying: "When I first moved to Hollywood, I shunned publicity. The movie companies tried to involve us, but I resisted as much as possible. But then I realized that the more publicity you gained, the more money you can ask for!" But it wasn't just about making a name for yourself in the industry, it was also about building that all-important client relationship. As Sydney adds: "Personal relationships are crucial on and off screen. I knew everybody; they trusted my judgement. I had a lot of fun with the stars."
