A familiar face backstage at fashion week and a firm favourite with session stylists the world over, ghd celebrated their catwalk heritage with the launch of their Guide to the Season SS 2012.

Covering all the key looks hair professionals will be creating for their clients over the coming months, the glossy guide and accompanying DVD outline four key trends created backstage by ghd this season.

Presented to a team of industry journalists by ghd's creative director, Kenna, the looks demonstrated how to transform trends from runway to reality.

It's a Kind of Magic

Inspired by Scandinavian folklore and the idea of a girl trapped in a forest, this look was all about waves, texture and baby hairs.

Hair was prepped with ghd Total Volume Foam and Curl Hold Spray and dried in, then five small plaits were created at the back of the head. These braids were then clamped between stylers and, once cool, undone to create soft, slightly frizzy waves.

Exposed ears added to the ethereal look, which was also inspired by tales of mischievous fairies and evil elves.

Created by Kenna and the ghd team at Aminaka Wilmont for Spring/Summer 2012, the look was described as, "girls emerging as if from the woodland with an enchanted quality.

Beyond the Sea

Embracing a more-is-more approach to texture, this look was all about wet-look hair, tousled lengths and a home-spun feel.

At Basso and Brooke, where the ghd team created the hair, the look was slightly more subtle  with contrasting textures.

Hair was prepped with ghd Root Lift through the lengths and ends to create a natural, wavy texture which was enhanced with stylers. Hair was then secured in a low ponytail, allowing baby hairs to fall out.

ghd Smooth and Finish Serum was then pressed into the hairline for a wet-look finish.

Walk the Line

The devore fabric in David Koma's catwalk collection inspired the visible lines in the Walk the Line look, which explored geometric shapes.

Structured ponytails were rendered more complex thanks to multiple partings and elaborately constructed sections.

Hair was prepped with ghd Heat Protect Spray and Straight & Smooth Cream then blow-dried smooth.

Eight diamond sections were then created and secured with clear elastics, with each misted with Final Fix Hairpsray for a neat finish with clean visible lines.

All the hair was then brought together, creating  one ponytail with hair underneath left long and straight.

Gloss Over it

The high shine trend continues this season, further cementing itself as the fashion-finish of choice.

Worked into ponytails, braids and slicked-down dos, the lacquer look gives small, tight head shapes a statement finish.

The look created at Maria Grachvogel by ghd saw low-slung ponytails vamped up with leather ties and a waxy, wet-look finish.

Hair was prepped with ghd Heat Protect Spray and Root Lift, then blow-dried smooth and styled in a zig-zag parting.

Hair was then pulled into a tight ponytail and secured with leather cord to pull the tail out from the back of the head.
