Providing an edgy alternative to classic vintage glamour, the gothic look takes its cue from the couture shows. Versace, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang and Givenchy all showcased back-to-black looks on the catwalk, with lace, leather and latex all adding bite to the Autumn/Winter shows.

And the look is perfectly translated to hair, allowing you and your clients to embrace rich, velvety shades of black and darkest brunette, complemented with elegant vintage styling.

Here we take a look at the stars who are wearing it well, with expert commentary from some of hairdressing's leading names.

Dita Von Teese
"I love Dita's look; everything about it is absolutely right for her. I love the glamorous 1960s styling; the dark, luxurious, shine against her pale skin and contrasting lips works perfectly; I wouldn't change a thing. The hair looks expensive, as does her style. It's an extremely elegant take on the Gothic trend."

Jessica Stam
"This glam-Goth look is super sleek. To get the high-shine look, shampoo the hair and comb through an intense leave-in conditioner. Part the hair to one side and blow-dry away from the face using a natural bristle brush - these are gentler on the scalp than synthetic brushes and will help to distribute natural hair oils for a glossy finish. Run straighteners through the length of the hair, tuck behind the ears and finish with a shine spray for a polished look."

Lana Del Rey
"Lana looks absolutely incredible with her sophisticated dark colour and
seductive Merlot lips, which together complement her pale skin perfectly. By wearing her side-parted, vintage waves soft and glossy, she's managed to keep Hollywood glamour fresh, while the tone gives it a new edge. Her look is very Snow-White-meets-Evil-Queen, but she's successfully achieved a 21st century take on Gothic glamour and she looks gorgeous."
Sarah Bowron, Aesthetics, Solihull

Lily Collins
"Lily totally nails this gorgeous hairstyle, fusing together Gothic and glam. The look encapsulates the strength of dark, luscious, glossy locks with the softness and fullness of the styling, creating a wearable but still edgy feel to the hair. Think Twilight mixed with a splash of Katy Perry and a dash of Dita von Teese."
