Check out these four summer hair trends for men and the expert tips to translate them from the catwalk into opportunities in your salon or barber shop. Bonus – they're all totally wearable.
The buzz cut
On the catwalk: The buzz cut was shown as a style suitable for all hair textures at What We Wear, Matthew Miller and Belstaff.
In the salon: “Traditionally, the buzz cut is a ‘close to the head’ style achieved entirely with clippers,” explains Toni & Guy artistic director, Dexter Johnson. “But now there are many different variations. Like the ‘Induction Cut’ which myself and the Toni & Guy session team created at the What We Wear show. Its short length means it is low maintenance and suits all hair textures.”

Long hair
On the catwalk: Shiny, healthy long hair was seen at Christopher Raeburn, Katie Eary and Gucci. And there wasn’t a man bun in sight…
In the salon: “As the man bun craze starts to wane, men are coming in for trims on areas which have become damaged from wearing it up,” says L’Oréal ID Artist Marc Timbers of The Gallery Haircutters in Norwich. “Rather than a full-on undercut I am doing what I call a micro undercut – it goes from the temple, barely skims the top of the ear and follows the hairline.”

Curls aloud
On the catwalk: Curls are now less precise and manicured and seen at shows such as Daniel W. Fletcher and Body Bound.
In the salon: “An overarching ‘trend’ this season is individuality. In hair terms this means using the model’s natural texture,” explains Toni & Guy international artistic director Daniele De Angelis. “At Daniel W. Fletcher the team worked with the model’s natural curls and length as a base. If clients already have a natural curl, lightweight products which define the hair without weighing it down will work best.”

The shag
On the catwalk: Whether short or medium length, tousled or styled wet, ‘the Shag’ was a hit at shows such as D.GNAK, Christopher Raeburn, E.Tautz and Topman.
In the salon: “Shaggy cuts are becoming popular,” explains Marc Timbers. “I'm getting a lot of gents in the chair who are growing their hair longer or looking for a change from short back and sides. Adding texture and removing weight in heavy areas helps achieve this, and makes the shaggy style easy for them to maintain at home.”
