Fringes are Having a Moment in 2024

With Claudia Winkleman on The Traitors, Zendaya at Paris Couture Fashion Week and Maura Higgins at the Argylle Premiere, it seems fringes are having a moment.

According to British Hairdresser of the Year 2023, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, Cos Sakkas, a fringe can update any hairstyle – something celebrities are very good at doing. “I’m not surprised fringes are so popular at the moment as they can really transform a hairstyle. A fringe will add another dimension to a short haircut, or update a longer hairstyle, and create a focal point to the face. It can totally change someone’s look in an instant.”

Daniele de Angelis from TONI&GUY agrees, saying as celebrities swap up their styling, they’re a huge influence for clients. “Celebrities are really playing with their hairstyles right now, but not everyone is brave enough to take the step and cut their hair shorter. The fringe is a great option for introducing a short length; it’s something different and can be strong enough for the change to command attention.”

While hair is the accessory you never take off, the fringe frames the face and makes it the centre of attention, says Sharon Malcolm from Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing, Newtownards. “A micro fringe as worn by Zendaya at Paris Couture Fashion Week is perfect for those who are open-minded to try something a little bit different – but want to remain beautiful. A micro fringe is a great way to make a statement but it isn’t for the faint hearted. Zendaya’s high neckline and subtle make-up complement it perfectly.”

Akin Konizi from HOB Academy says the fringe is one of the most important parts of a hairstyle and shouldn’t be under-estimated. “It’s important to get the fringe right, because it’s the most visible part of the haircut. It can take an everyday style from boring to ravishing. There’s no hiding it and it can make a style look completely different. There are so many styles of fringe to choose from and it becomes part of the wearer’s character, for example Claudia is lauded for her eye-skimming, glossy fringe and her hair wouldn’t be as dynamic without it.”

If your client isn't sure what type of fringe they should opt for, why not suggest something that will complement their face shape?
