Still not figured out how to do a figure of 8 braid? Allow Sharon Blain to show you how, in this step-by-step for
MyHairDressers.com.
Using a pull-thread technique, this tutorial will also cover dressing hair, rollering, sectioning, and setting. The final result is a quick salon technique with a youthful style, perfect for for formals, bridals and proms.
Step one
Prepare the hair by applying a full set of heated rollers. Remove the rollers and allow the hair to cool then brush through from roots to ends.
Step two
Take a section in the crown where the head rounds to just above the occipital bone.
Start at the top of the section and divide the section into three equal parts. Create a central narrow, three-strand scalp braid from crown to nape – picking up from one side only. Bind with a small elastic and leave the remaining hair free.
Step three
Brush through the remaining hair. Create a triangular section in the fringe from recession to recession, then divide in two.
Step four
Use a strong thread matched to the colour of the hair in order to conceal. Fasten the thread around the left triangle and push it down the strand.
Step five
Gather the second strand. Pass the thread under the left and over and under the right; then over and under the left in a figure of 8.
Step six
Pick up the hair on both sides and add into the strands. Keep the thread taut and do another figure of 8.
Step seven
Continue to execute one figure of 8, then pick up on both sides. As you work, the picked up sections get larger. Stay mindful of even section widths and lines. When you reach the nape fasten in place.
Step eight
Starting in the front, grab hair from near the cord, pull out and lift the hair on the outer part of the head. Repeat the same process on the second side. This is a visual technique. Apply the same technique through the sides.
Step nine
Push the thread braid forward and pin in place with unlatched bobby pins.
Step ten
Gather the remaining hair and twist. Pull out and loosen pieces of hair.
Step eleven
Fold the hair up and fold it back on itself, then pin to the scalp braid.
